Douglas Nelson Fleming

Southern Pines, NC.  Douglas Nelson Fleming, born November 8, 1934, passed away on Sunday, April 2, 2017 at his home in Southern Pines, NC.  After high school he served honorably in the U.S. Navy.  When he left the service he attended Columbia School of Drafting in Arlington VA for 2 yrs. studying architectural drafting.  He worked as a draftsman for an architect in Washington DC in the 1960s and then became a senior draftsman at Marriott-Hot Shoppes, also located in Washington DC.  He stayed at Marriott, developing many new hotels as project director for the design and construction division during a fifteen year career.

After leaving Marriott in the mid 1980's he continued to work with developers of other hotel and office projects for the next 20 years. Doug was respected by his peers for his ability to pull the design teams together to complete complex multi-million dollar construction projects.

When he and Joann retired to Bedford he took an interest in revitalizing the Bedford Springs Hotel.  He spent countless hours on Bedford’s behalf at meetings, traveling to Harrisburg, hosting groups at lunch at his house, doing whatever he believed would hasten the approvals for a restored Bedford Springs Hotel.  He gave Bedford his time and talent and asked for nothing in return.

In 2015, Doug and Joann relocated to Southern Pines, NC.  He and Joann were married for 57 years.  He is survived by his wife, Joann, and two brothers, Tom and Joe, and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery on Friday, April 7, 2017 at 11 am with Rev. Ernest Witmer officiating.
