The Greatest Generation lost another fine member. Fred substituted for me at WHS in my American History class. He was always welcomed because he brought expertise like no other. I enjoyed many conversations with him about the war and history in general. He will be missed by all who came in contact with him. My sincere condolences go to his family.

I remember Mr Johnson and what a special teacher he was at SHHS 1978. I wish he would have shared his military experience with us but that is ok. I send my sympathy to the family. Thanks for the memories, Mr Fred... so long for now...

With sadness I learned of Fred's Passing. I had the pleasure of being a faculty colleague with
Fred for many years while at both Hancock High and South Hagerstown High. Fred ran a
good program in his teaching of History and will be remembered among many highly regarded
academic instructors in the early years at South High. May his family be comforted in the
days ahead.

I'm so sorry about Mr. Johnson. All the Stengers remember the Johnson family living across the street from us in Van Lear. I have many memories of singing a classical solo at church and Mr. Johnson saying how much he appreciated it. On my travels I would often bring him back a local newspaper to read. Such a wonderful man. I'm honored to be singing at his service tomorrow. I'm so sorry for your loss. Ruthy

My mother Jean Dullabaun, myself, and my husband, Ward Clem send our deepest sympathy. The connection between our families are multi-generational: My parents met Mrs. Johnson when they were all students at Frostburg State Teachers College; South High - my Dad Vaughn, who also passed away this year, shared a bond with Mr. Johnson as both were long time teachers at South and both were teachers with the TV project at the Board of Ed., and Dad also taught at South at the same time as Mr. Ellsworth; and lastly, both myself and my husband were taught by Mr. Johnson at South and we both enjoyed our classes with him -- in fact he was my favorite teacher as he nurtured my love of history. Mr Johnson truly cared about his students and past students as he often asked my Dad how I was and what I was doing. From Mr. Johnson's obit, I realized our families had another connection -- Lake Ontario. My mother can trace her family roots from the frontier days of Lake Ontario, including the towns of Oswego and Williamson. Her roots then branched east across the Finger Lakes (where Dad also has family roots) to just east of the Syracuse area. Over the years, my husband and I have enjoyed family events and touring this area of New York state and have cherished memories just as I am sure Mr. Johnson did.
