Junior Roy Hessler

Junior Roy (JR) Hessler, 93, of Hagerstown, MD passed away peacefully Saturday morning December 2, 2017 at Doey's Hospice House in Hagerstown, MD.

JR is also affectionately known as Bud, Pap, Pappy and Pappy with the Truck.

He was married to Alice Baker Henson Hessler for 41 years.  They enjoyed traveling through out the United States. She predeceased him in 2011.  

After Alice's passing, he became very active with the Washington County Senior Center.  It helped give him a new lease on life.  He studied Spanish, art and computers. He took Tai Chi and strength training lessons.  He was especially famous for his creative Halloween costumes!

He is survived by his son, Kevin R Hessler and wife, Jeannie, of Frederick, MD, his daughter, Tammy Hessler Spitzer and husband, Chuck, of Williamsport, MD, and son, Eric P Henson and wife, Joanna, of Clear Spring, MD.

JR also leaves behind five grandchildren.  Gregory Hessler andwife, Beth, of Charlotte, NC, Meghan Hessler and significant other, Connor Stemple, of Frederick, MD,  Matthew Spitzer of Williamsport, MD Zachary Spitzer of Williamsport, MD, andErika Miller and husband, Tyler, of Virginia Beach, VA. 

He will also be remembered by step-daughter Sylvia Scarborough and husband, Walter Clayton “Buck”. He is also remembered by six step-grandchildren.  Wendy Bowman, BobWillis, David Willis, Amy Willis, Cory Hebb and Billy Hebb.

JR was also predeceased by step-daughter, Carolyn (Casey) Henson Willis.

He has nine great-grandchildren and counting!

JR was born on July 28, 1924 to Herbert R Hessler and Carrie Belle Riser Hessler in Cherry Run, West Virginia.  He is the last surviving member of his family. He enjoyed many fun times on the family farm with his five brothers, Ward, Cecil, Hanson (Bump), Chester(Chet), Ray and two sisters, Evelyn(Evie) Rhoe and Dorothy(Dot) Mock. He is remembered by many nieces and nephews.

He is also remembered by his former wife, Rose Marie Hessler and long-term caregiver and dear friend Nicki Silver-Turner.

JR had a natural talent and passion for woodworking.  He built many pieces of furniture which now grace his children’s homes.   For years he sold his wares at local craft fairs.  He enjoyed gardening and fishing. He was a Little League manager and coach and was a fierce Baltimore Orioles baseball fan.  When baseball season ended he would say "What am I going to do now?"  

He was a member of the Rehoboth United Methodist Church.

JR was a proud WWII US Army veteran who was deployed in the Pacific.  He spent most of his working years at Mack Truck retiring in 1982.  He was a member of the Williamsport American Legion Post 202.

The family will receive friends at the Osborne Funeral Home 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD on Thursday, December 7, 2017 from 2:00-4:00 pm and 6:00-8:00 pm.  

Funeral services will be held at Osborne Funeral Home, on Friday, December 8, 2017 at 11:00 am with Pastor Mike Bennett officiating.  Funeral procession to Norland Cemetery in Chambersburg, PA will begin immediately following the service for a Military burial.  A reception will be held at Rehoboth United Methodist Church, 30 E. Salisbury St, Williamsport MD,after interment.

Memorial donations may be made to Washington County Commission on Aging, Senior Center, 535 East Franklin Street, Hagerstown MD or the Rehoboth Methodist Church Building Fund.
