Steven Leonard Bittner of Williamsport, MD, loving son, husband, brother, and friend, died at home while under Hospice care on November 8, 2016.  He was a kind and generous man, loved for his empathy, his good nature, and his sense of humor.

Steve is survived by his mother, Rosemarie of Mars, PA; his loving wife of 37 years, Joni; his sister, Karen Childers (Steven) of Santa Fe, NM; his father-in-law, Robert Frye of Ridgeley, WV; and many cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Bittner and his mother-in-law Mary Frye.

Born in Pittsburgh, PA on July 21, 1954, Steve graduated from Shaler Area High School in 1972 and went on to earn his BS from WVU and his Masters from Frostburg State College.  He was employed by the Maryland DNR as a wildlife biologist for 31 years, retiring in 2011.

An enjoyment of number crunching led Steve to becoming a CPA in 1993.  He used this talent for tax preparation and to voluntarily provide services to seniors through the Commission on Aging.  A strong believer in serving others, Steve was an active member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church; chairing the Capital Campaign Committee, leading youth programs, serving as a Trustee, and supporting the annual auction from the beginning.  He was a long time member of the Exchange Club of Antietam and a faithful volunteer for Meals on Wheels.  Steve cherished hunting weekends at the farm in Saegertown, PA with his family; golfing, biking, and traveling with friends; and passionately supporting all Pittsburgh sports teams.

The family will receive friends at the Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD on Sunday, November 13, 2016 from 2 to 5 pm.  A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 802 Summit Ave., Hagerstown, MD on Monday, November 14, 2016, at 11am with Rev. Randy Reid officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Emmanuel UMC Endowment Fund in Steve’s honor.
