Vincent Glenwood "Woody" Spong

Hagerstown, MD – Vincent Glenwood “Woody” Spong, 73, of Hagerstown, MD passed away on Friday, March 31, 2017 at his home.

 

He was born on April 19, 1943 in Hagerstown, MD to the late Vincent Spong and Winifred G. Spong Smith.

 

He was a 1961 graduate of Williamsport High School, received his Bachelor’s of Science Degree from the University of Maryland in 1967 and was a life member of Signa Chi Fraternity.  He continued his education and graduated from Western Maryland College with his Master’s Degree in Administration and Supervision.

 

For over 30 years Woody taught at various Elementary Schools in Washington County and was Principal at Keedysville Elementary, Pleasant Valley Elementary, and Salem Avenue Elementary until his retirement. 

 

After his retirement he was a guide at Woodmont Rod & Gun Club and Executive Director Leadership Hagerstown and served as a Washington County Commissioner. He held various positions within the Washington County Teachers Association and Maryland State Teachers Association.

 

He was a member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church Williamsport, MD.

 

He is survived by his wife Constance A. (Holland) Spong they were High School sweethearts married on April 13, 1968; daughter Sally A. Spong of Hagerstown, MD; granddaughter Katie Mae Keckler; brother Gary L. Smith and his wife Dixie of Williamsport, MD; mother and father in law Ivan J. and A. Fae Holland of Williamsport, MD and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Woody loved his family dearly. His daughter and granddaughter were the lights of his life. 

 

He was very skilled at hiring talented, energetic teachers and creating a school environment where all students could thrive and learn.  He held a very special place in his heart for disadvantaged and disabled children.  Woody loved walking in the school hallways and visiting his students in their classrooms.  He knew every student in each of his schools on a personal level and they knew that he cared for them.  He was never happier than when he saw a child’s eyes light up and they smiled while they were learning.  He valued and respected every employee and volunteer in each of the schools where he served as Principal.

 

Woody also held a very special place in his heart for his friends and beloved Labrador retrievers with whom he spent many relaxing weekends at his cabin in the Shenandoah Valley where they enjoyed canoeing, fishing, target shooting, training dogs and telling tall tales.

 

He was very proud of his Virginia heritage and was a member of the Sons of the Confederacy.  He was an avid reader of Civil War and World War II history and newspapers.

 

He enjoyed training Labrador retrievers and competing in and judging Labrador retriever Club field trials.

 

The family will receive friends at the Osborne Funeral Home 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 pm.  The funeral home will be open after 9:00 am on Wednesday for the convenience of family and friends.

 

A memorial service will be held at Rehoboth United Methodist Church Williamsport, MD on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at 11:00 am with Rev. Michael W. Bennett officiating.  Interment will be private.
