Halfway, MD – Gladys Virginia Smith, 103, of Halfway, MD passed away on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at the Village at Robinwood Hagerstown, MD.

 

She was born on June 18, 1914 in Berkeley County, WV to the late John William and Gertrude L. Miller Griffin.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl David Smith on March 14, 2006.

 

She attended Marlowe and Williamsport Schools.

 

Gladys was employed by Harper & Row Publishers for 18 years until retiring in 1976.  She was previously employed by Eyerly’s Department Store in downtown Hagerstown.

 

She was a member of Hagerstown Bible Church, where she was also a member of the Mary & Martha Sunday School Class.

 

She was a collector of decorative glassware. She also collected Hummels, and dolls.

 

She is survived by her son Gerald L. “Gerry” Smith, Sr. and his wife Jan of Winchester, VA; grandson Gerald L. “Jerry” Smith, Jr. and his wife Donna of Winchester, VA; sister Hilda E. Betts of Naples, FL; very special longtime friend Gail Colliflower; special neighbor friends Gloria, Darlene 1, Darlene 2, Al, and Rose; also survived by several nieces and nephews.

 

She was predeceased by her brother John D. Griffin, brother in law Elvin Betts, and sister in law Lorraine Griffin.

 

For the convenience of family and friends the funeral home will be open on Monday, December 11, 2017 from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm.

 

Graveside services will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Park Williampsort, MD on Monday, December 11, 2017 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Dale Carver officiating.
