Joseph Edgar Churchey, Sr.

Sharpsburg, MD – Joseph Edgar Churchey, Sr., 94, of Sharpsburg, MD passed away on Friday, May 4, 2018 at Meritus Medical Center Hagerstown, MD.

He was born on August 23, 1923 in Sharpsburg, MD to the late Joseph Seibert and Mary Mae Jamison Churchey.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Virginia Yeager Churchey on April 15, 1987. They were married for 42 years, she was the love of his life.

He was employed as a Foreman by Western Maryland Railway Hagerstown, MD until his retirement.

Joseph faithfully attended Gapland Christian Church Knoxville, MD.

He was an honorary member of the Woodmen of the World where he enjoyed listening to Bluegrass Music.

He was a member of the Western Maryland Railway Safety Committee.

He previously served on the Sharpsburg Town Council and also previously served on the Board at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Sharpsburg.

Joseph was a good man who worked hard to provide for his family.  He loved spending time with his family and friends and lived life to the fullest.  He enjoyed butchering, gardening, canning, carpentry, and sharing his knowledge with others.  He also enjoyed traveling and telling stories about his travels.

He is survived by his daughter Audrey L. Blevins and her husband Rick of Sharpsburg, MD; son Joseph E. Churchey, Jr. and his wife Terry of Sharpsburg, MD; sister Alta Mae Crampton of Sharpsburg, MD; grandchildren Donald D. Churchey, Sr., Ronald S. Churchey, Amy L. Blevins-Selby, Heather A. Morningstar, and Marta Swisher; great grandchildren Donnie, Luke, Alisha, Megan, Anna, Matthew, Rachel, Raven, Mercedes, and Wayne.

He also has extended family and friends both living and deceased.

He was predeceased by a son Donald A. Helman, daughter Joan L. Grimm, six sisters Ethel Semler, Hazel Canfield, Louise Darner, Dorothy Byrd, Margaret Hazelton, and Phyllis Gray, and four brothers Charles Churchey, Clifford Churchey, Lee Churchey, and Frederick Churchey.

The family will receive friends at the Osborne Funeral Home 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 pm.  The funeral home will be open after 1:00 pm on Tuesday for the convenience of family and friends.

Graveside services will be held at Mt. View Cemetery Sharpsburg, MD on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at 11:00 am with Rev. James Jones officiating.
