Joseph Scott Obituary


Hagerstown, MD – Joseph Kyle Scott, 103, of Hagerstown, MD passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at his home.
 
He was born on October 17, 1914 in Port Republic, Virginia to the late Harvey Haynes and Florence Connell Scott.
 
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion C. Scott in 2016.
 
Joe was a graduate of Bridgewater College, Bridgewater, Virginia with his Bachelor’s Degree, and from Virginia Polytechnical Institute with his Master’s Degree and other graduate work.
 
He entered the United States Army Air Force in 1942 and served for 3½ years. He served on the Island of Tinina where the first atomic bombs were assembled.
 
He was a Principal and teacher for a two-room school in Humes Run near Elkton, Virginia 1935-1936. Teacher of Vocational Agriculture at Merriwether-Lewis High School in Charlottesville, VA for 5 years from 1937-1942. He also coached baseball, basketball, and boxing. Joe taught Agriculture Adult Education for GI training program in Gettysburg from 1946-1948. Next, he was a teacher of Vocational Agriculture and FFA Advisor at Williamsport High School for 20 years from 1948-1968. He was the Principal of Williamsport High School   from 1968-1978 until his retirement in 1978.
 
Joe was in charge of weed control in Washington County from 1978-1980.
 
He was a member of Williamsport United Methodist Church for over 70 years, and was the Superintendent of Sunday School for 23 years. 
 
He was also a member of the Washington County Retired Personnel Educational Association, member of the Maryland Agriculture Land Preservation Foundation, member and past president of the Maryland State Agriculture Teacher’s Association, and a member and past president of the Williamsport Lion’s Club with perfect attendance for 67 years. 
 
Joe served on the Washington County Soil Conservation District Board and also served as past Chairman. He also served on Maryland State Advisory Board for Victor Cullen Center.
 
He is survived by his daughter Susan D. McCormick of Dryden, NY; daughter Sally C. Mummert of Williamsport, MD; grandchildren Melissa Vanderhoff, Marshall McCormick, Carrie Johnson, Michelle Rand, and Scott Mummert; 6 great grandchildren.
 
Besides his parents and wife he was predeceased by his son James H. Scott, daughter Ann S. Johnson, brothers Charles Scott, Herman Scott, Arthur Scott, Harvey Scott, and two sisters Virginia Wonderley and Pearl Almond.
 
The family will receive friends at the Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport, MD on Friday, June 1, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 PM. The funeral home will be open after 9:00 AM on Friday for the convenience of family and friends.
 
Funeral services will be held at Williamsport United Methodist Church, Williamsport, MD on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Susan E. Boehl officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park Hagerstown, MD. Military honors will be provided by Joint Veterans Council of Washington Council and Marine Corps League of Washington County.
