Melvin Draper Obituary

Sharpsburg, MD – Melvin Leroy Draper, 79, of Sharpsburg, MD passed away on Monday, August 12, 2019 at Doey’s House of Hagerstown, MD.

 

He was born on December 18, 1939 in a home on Dr. Ditto’s Farm on Neck Rd. in Williamsport, MD to the late Harry Hawbaker and Harriet Catherine Showman Draper.

 

He was a 1957 graduate of Boonsboro High School and also attended Clear Spring and Williamsport Schools.

 

Melvin and his wife Abbie owned and operated many businesses throughout their married life in the Sharpsburg Area.  Most notably the Battleview Market, Draper’s Excavating, Draper’s Refuse Service, A&M Mt. View Farms, and Rt. 65 Flea Market.

 

Throughout his life he had a passion for farming, raising horses and cattle.  He participated in jousting, horse shows, and riding horses in the Sharpsburg Memorial Parade. 

 

Melvin enjoyed hunting with his son and brothers in Western Maryland and also trips to Canada, Colorado, and Montana.  He was a mentor to many people and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone.   He always enjoyed spending time with his family. He took care of digging the graves for the Manor and Bakersville Church Cemeteries for many years up until the last 2 months of his life.

He was of the Brethren Faith.

 

He was a member of the Quarter Horse Association.

 

He is survived by his wife Abbie Jean (Kline) Draper whom he married August 30, 1959; daughter Melody Canfield and her husband Rick of Sharpsburg, MD; daughter Danielle Schrecengost and her husband Geoffery of Sharpsburg, MD; sisters Mary Deike and Norma Zeger; brothers Robert Draper and his wife Geraldine, Roger Draper, and Terry Draper and his wife Kim; sisters in laws Olive Draper, Shelva Draper, and Ellie Draper; brother in law Robert Eckstine; grandchildren Dustin Stipes (Joenna), Dana Draper, Jr. (Stephanie), Hannah Canfield, Erin Planck (Jesse), Benjamin Draper, and Sierra Nocar; great grandchildren Peyton, Brayden, Shaelyn, Emma, Kinsley, and Baby Planck and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

He was predeceased by a son Dana Draper, Sr.; sisters Launa “Sis” Mellott, Hazel Draper, Martha Eckstine, and Irene Phillips; brothers Emory Draper, Albert Draper, Wayne Draper, Harry Draper, and Glen Draper; sister in laws Lorraine Draper, Lyle Mellott, Rod Deike, Phil Zeger, and Tom Phillips.

 

The family will receive friends at the Osborne Funeral Home 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD on Friday, August 16, 2019 from 6:00-8:00 pm.  The funeral home will be open after 9:00 am on Friday for the convenience of family and friends.

 

Funeral services will be held at Osborne Funeral Home 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at 11:00 am with Rev. Joy Zepp officiating. Interment will be in Mt. View Cemetery Sharpsburg, MD.
