Roberta Ernestine Smith

Boonsboro, MD – Roberta Ernestine Smith, 95, of Boonsboro, MD passed away on Monday, February 19, 2018 at Fahrney Keedy Nursing Home Boonsboro, MD.

She was born on September 29, 1922 in Eakle’s Cross Roads, Maryland to the late Robert and Gladys Irene Hammond Hammond.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Gardner Samuel Moats on September 30, 1965 and her second husband Leonard Moats Smith on December 1, 1998.

She was a 1940 graduate of Williamsport High School Williamsport, MD.

Roberta was employed by Washington County National Bank Williamsport, MD for 13 years until her retirement.  She was previously employed for 13 years at Schamels Grocery Store in St. James, MD.

She was a member for more than 70 years at St. James Brethren Church St. James, MD and also belonged to the Women’s Sunday School Class.

She was a 25 year member of the Washington County Homemaker’s where she acted as the Treasurer of the Scholarship Fund.  She was also a member of the Fahrney Keedy Auxiliary. 

After her retirement Roberta enjoyed traveling to many places with her friends.

She is survived by her son Gary H. Moats and his wife Deborah of Hagerstown, MD; half sister Doris Saum of Hagerstown, MD; half sister Barbara Anderson of Hagerstown, MD; granddaughter Diane Reynolds of Hagerstown, MD; granddaughter Jennifer Toman and her husband Tony of Hagerstown, MD; great granddaughter Kayla Hammer and her husband Rob; 1 great great grandson.

She was predeceased by one daughter Sandra L. Anderson, 2 half brothers Leroy Metz and Jerry Metz, and one step brother Robert Hammond.

Funeral services will be held at the Osborne Funeral Home 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD on Friday, February 23, 2018 at 11:00 am with Chaplain Twyla Rowe.  The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service on Friday from 10:00-11:00 am.  The funeral home will be open after 9:00 am on Friday for the convenience of family and friends.  Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park Williamsport, MD.
