Ruth H. Ritchey

Ruth Hartford Ritchey was born to Mrs. Ruth Snee and Mr. Edward Elmer Hartford in Toronto, OH on April 4, 1929. Ruth died at her Hagerstown, Maryland home surrounded by family in peace.

Ruth was predeceased by her loving husband of 56 years, Wesley Allen Ritchey, her parents, brother Edward Bock Hartford, and brother-in-law David Albert Ritchey. Ruth is survived by her daughters, Margaret Ruth Ritchey (Meg), Carolyn Ritchey Mentzer, and son-in-law Randy Delbert Mentzer, sister-in-law Bonita Ritchey Bute, brother-in-law Michael Herman Ritchey and wife Shirley, and sister-in-law Patricia Delamater Ritchey, and sister Sally Mattix.

Ruth was valedictorian of her high school class in Martins Ferry, OH. Ruth graduated Cum Laude with a B.A. in Spanish, English, and Physical Sciences from Ohio University, where she was women’s student body president, president of her sorority Alpha Xi Delta, Phi Beta Kappa, and Mortar Board. Ruth went on to graduate with honors, receiving a Master’s of Education in Remedial Reading from Bowling Green State University. A life-long educator, Ruth retired from teaching at Leipsic High School in Leipsic, OH. After retiring, Ruth continued as a volunteer with Project Literacy where she taught English as a second language.

Ruth enjoyed traveling with her husband and family, collecting antiques, gardening, and became a master gardener. Ruth loved music, playing piano, reading, and being active in her church. She enjoyed playing bridge, games, and spending time with family, friends, and beloved animals.

Funeral services will be held on Friday August 23, 2019 at 2:00pm at the Osborne Funeral Home 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD 21795 with Rev. Gregory P. Shook officiating.  Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Williamsport, MD.

The family will receive friends on Friday 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home from 1:00pm-2:00pm.  For the convenience of family and friends the funeral home will open Friday at 9:00am.
