Williamsport, MD – Virgil Leo “Skip” Bowers, 86, of Williamsport, MD, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 4, 2018 at Meritus Medical Center, Hagerstown, MD.
He was born in Williamsport, MD on April 5, 1932, son of the late Gyrlen Leo and Estella Virginia Poffenberger Bowers.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Faye Lavern Cavender Bowers in October of 2017.
Skip was a 1951 graduate of Williamsport High School. He excelled at soccer and basketball in school and continued playing on home town teams for several years.
He served as a Deputy Game Warden for the Maryland Game and Inland Fish Commission for several years in the 1950’s.
Being a Boy Scout and Sea Scout as a youth, he continued his connection with Scouting as an Assistant Scout Master from 1966-1970 with Troop 17 in Williamsport.
Skip was a member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church in Williamsport and later Skip and Faye regularly attended the Valley Assembly of God.
He was employed by Potomac Edison Company for 31 years, starting in 1962 at the R. Paul Smith Power Station in Williamsport and retiring as 1st Class Electrical Mechanic with Substation Construction in 1993.
An avid hunter and fisherman, he was an active member of the Potomac Fish and Game Club until recent years.
Skip is survived by his son, Kim L. Bowers and his wife Michele of Williamsport, MD; Granddaughter Megan Wilson and her husband James of Martinsburg, WV; Grandson Dr. Patrick Bowers of Erie, PA; Sister Joy Virginia Bryan and her husband John; Sister Alva Jean Harsh and her husband Donald; Brother Donald Ray Bowers and his wife Doris; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the Osborne Funeral Home 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 from 7:00-9:00 pm. The funeral home will be open after 9:00 am on Wednesday for the convenience of family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at Osborne Funeral Home 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at 1:30 pm with Mr. Kevin Smoot officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park Williamsport, MD.
