Obituary

Williamsport, MD – Andrew Jackson “Jack” Downin, 81, of Williamsport, MD passed away on Tuesday, June 9, 2020 at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, MD.

 

He was born on March 7, 1939 in Williamsport, MD he was the son of the late D. Bruce and Thelma (Hankey) Downin.

 

Jack was a 1957 graduate of Williamsport High School in Williamsport, MD.

 

He retired from Mack Truck in August 2004 with 36 years of service.  He was an Auctioneer, Farmer, Cattleman, and family man.

 

A veteran of the U.S. Army (SP4), he served in Vietnam in 1963 and 1964, as a helicopter crew chief.  He was awarded an air medal and combat air clusters.

 

Jack worked on cattle ranch’s in Mississippi and showed cattle over the United States in the 1950’s and 1960’s.  He was on the State 4-H Livestock Judging Team in 1955 and the State FFA Judging Team in 1957.  He also served on the Eastern National Livestock Association for 20 plus years.  Jack was also a member of Maryland Angus, Hereford, and Shorthorn Associations.  He auctioneered cattle sales in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.  He also auctioneered for many County Fairs in Maryland and Virginia.  Jack was always willing to help support young FFA and 4-H members.  He volunteered his time as an Auctioneer for many organizations, Ducks Unlimited, Hospice of Washington County, Habitat for Humanity (Franklin County, PA), and the National Turkey Federation in Pennsylvania.

 

He was a member of AARP, Joseph C. Herbert American Legion Post #222 Clear Spring, MD; Mercersburg Moose #1790, and Greencastle VFW #6319.

 

Jack is survived by his wife Patricia Ann Stevens Silvers Downin whom he married on October 24, 1997; Pat’s son Jack L. Silvers, Jr.; one special granddaughter who he adored with all his heart, she was Pappy’s girl Nevaeh Skye Silvers of Williamsport, MD; two sisters Katherine P. Burtner of Somerford Place and L. Marie Downin of Doral, FL; two brothers John D. Downin of Peyton, CO and Thomas J. Downin (Kathy) of Williamsport, MD; sister in law Harriet Downin of Keedysville, MD; Pat’s family, nieces and nephews; special friends Allen and Carol Rowe; Allen and Fonda Rowe and family; Dwayne and Robin Gossard; Mark Forsyth and Darlene; Randy Ridgely; many many very special friends in his neighborhood; Charles Co. Fair Families; Alleghany Fair Families; Washington County Fair Families.  There are so many special friends it would be hard to name them all.  Also, a lot of guys he worked with at Mack Truck.

 

Jack was loved by so many people and will be dearly missed by all.  He was my soulmate and best friend but I know he wants me to go on.  I will miss him forever.  He always said I love my girls, meaning Pat and Nevaeh.

 

Jack was preceded in death by two sisters L. Josephine Landry and infant sister Trixie L. Downin and one brother William B. Downin.

 

Jack was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, National Pike Clear Spring.

 

Family and friends may pay their respects to Jack on Sunday, June 14, 2020 from 12:00 (noon) – 5:00 pm at Osborne Funeral Home 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD.

 

Private graveside services will be held at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Clear Spring, MD with Rev. Dave Sword officiating.
