Charles Kershner Obituary

Charles Russell Kershner, age 95 of Williamsport, MD passed away on Wednesday, June 3, 2020 at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, MD.  He was able to live at home until the day he died. 

 

Born in Hagerstown, MD on July 16, 1924, he was the son of the late John L. and Helen M.

(Neikirk) Kershner.  He is also preceded in death by his wife K. Jane (Reckard) Kershner and son C. Mark Kershner. 

 

Charles served in the Air Force as a gunner on a B-29 for the 507th Bombardment Squadron in the Pacific Theater during WWII and later was recalled during the Korean War.  He graduated from Frostburg State Teachers College in 1950.  He later received his Master’s Degree from the University of Maryland.  He served as a teacher/principal in Washington County for over 30 years, first at Cascade, Funkstown and Salem Avenue elementary schools. 

 

He was a longtime member of the Hagerstown Alsatia Club serving as president and parade chairman.  He was active until his death serving on the parade and scholarship committees.  He enjoyed bowling through the years, first with Alsatia and later with the Retired Teachers of Washington County.  He was a member of the Elks Club. He was a lifetime member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of Williamsport, MD.  He was a member of the Dixon-Troxel Post 211 American Legion, Funkstown, MD.  He was also a member of the Red Men Tribe 84, Williamsport, MD.  In addition to volunteering at his Church, he volunteered at Homewood Nursing Home, which named him Volunteer of the Year for 2014.   His favorite activity was spending time at Deep Creek Lake with family and friends. 

 

Charles is survived by his daughter Susan K. Shaw and husband Ed.  He is also survived by his daughter-in-law Katherine Kershner.  He is survived by grandchildren: Sallie Johnson and husband Mark, Betsy Sears and husband James, Charlie Kershner and wife Marni, Coury Gladden and husband Drew, Amanda Colley and husband Jesse.  Charles is also survived by eight great grandchildren Katherine, Claire and Benjamin Johnson, Harrison Sears, Mark and William Gladden, Jacob and Jericho Colley.

 

Family and friends may pay their respects on Monday, June 8th, from 10am-4pm at the Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague Street, Williamsport, MD. 

 

A private graveside service will be held with Pastor Kim Nunberg officiating.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church, 35 W Potomac St. Williamsport, MD.
