David E. Lawrence, Jr., age 72, of Hagerstown, MD passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at the home of his significant other, Linda (Kendall) Miles in Hagerstown, MD, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on March 17, 1950, the son of the late David E. Lawrence Sr. and the late Beatrice A. (Davis) Lawrence.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Paula K. (Jones) Lawrence in 1980.
David graduated from South Hagerstown High School, class of 1968. He then graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD in 1972 with a BS degree in Aeronautical Engineering.
He served 7 years as an Officer with the U.S. Navy, in various capacities, including a tour on a ship as Assistant Navigator, as a General Training Officer at a computer facility in Washington DC, as a Damage Control Assistant in the Engineering department on a reserve destroyer home-ported in Baltimore, MD, and as the Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Center in Cumberland, MD. He received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy in late 1979.
As a civilian, he was employed by Eastalco Aluminum Company as an Area Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor for 7 years, by Maryland Metals, Inc. as the Operations Manager for 7 years, and by Chevron Phillips Chemical, from where he retired in 2013 as the Plant Engineer at the Hagerstown Performance Pipe Facility.
He was of the Christian Faith.
David was a member of Dixon-Troxell Post #211 American Legion Funkstown, MD; Western Maryland Sportsman’s Club. He was previously involved in the Hagerstown Quarter Midget Association where he served on the Board of Directors and multiple terms as Vice President.
He was lovingly known as “Pap” to his grandchildren.
David loved bass fishing, spending time at the river, and enjoyed spending time with his family.
He is survived by his significant other Linda L. (Kendall) Miles of Hagerstown, MD; mother-in-law Mary Manzella Jones of Hagerstown, MD; son David E. Lawrence, III and his wife Shannon of Greencastle, PA; son Jason Patrick Lawrence and his wife Jennifer of Middletown, MD; son Jamie B. Lawrence and his wife Brooke of Sharpsburg, MD; sister Mary Jane Barganier of Lancaster, PA; sister Linda E. Goebeler of Columbia, SC; sister Susan Hoffman of Fairplay, MD; brother Mark Lawrence of Frederick, MD; grandchildren Zachary, Alyvia, Paula, Maggie, and Braedyn.
The family will receive friends at the Osborne Funeral Home, P.A. 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. The funeral home will be open after 9:00 am on Tuesday for the convenience of family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at Osborne Funeral Home, P.A. 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at 11:00 am with Pastor Walt Roberts officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park Hagerstown, MD.
