Doris Yukiko Bender

Sharpsburg, MD- Doris Yukiko Bender (Sakoda), 81, of Sharpsburg, MD passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2020 at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, MD.

She was born on October 21, 1938 in Pahoa, Hawaii she was the daughter of the late Itsuki and Tamayo Okada Sakoda and stepmother Kiku Sakoda.

Doris was a 1956 graduate of Pahoa High School in Pahoa, Hawaii.

For over 40 years she was the barber and owner of Bender’s Barbershop in Sharpsburg, MD.

Doris enjoyed playing bingo, gardening, and crocheted thousands of hats for newborns at Meritus Medical Center.

She is survived by her daughter Terrie L. Grim and her husband Mark of Sharpsburg, MD; son Duane T. Bender of Boonsboro, MD; son Edward Y. Bender of Sharpsburg, MD; grandson Jeffrey K. Grim of Ann Arbor, Michigan; grandson Joshua M. Grim of Frederick, MD; sister Janet Ikeda of Pahoa, Hawaii; sister Elsie Sakoda of Honolulu, Hawaii; sister Ethel Degushi of Pahoa, Hawaii; many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband Jacob E. Bender, Jr. They were married on October 29, 1958 he passed away on September 1, 2020; brothers Roy Sakoda, Richard Sakoda, Stanley Sakoda, Gary Sakoda, Douglas Sakoda, and Tommy Sakoda; sister Jean Sakoda.

Joint graveside services for both Jacob and Doris will be held on Monday, September 7, 2020 at 11:00 am at Mountain View Cemetery in Sharpsburg, MD with Rev. Ernest E. Witmer officiating.
