Williamsport, MD – Edward Burton “Pop” Grebenstein, of Williamsport, MD passed away on Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at Meritus Medical Center Hagerstown, MD.  He was surrounded by his loving family, was welcomed into his new life as he lived his own for 85 years, on his own terms.

 

Beloved husband, father and grandfather Poppy was the patriarch of the Grebenstein Family who was always there with a kind word or helpful advice.

 

He was born on January 10, 1933 in Ridgewood, New Jersey to the late Charles Henry and Marion Elizabeth Burton Grebenstein.

 

He was a graduate of Ridgewood High School Ridgewood, NJ and a 1954 graduate of Davis & Elkins College Elkins, WV receiving his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Ann Stover Grebenstein on November 23, 2008.

 

Edward was employed with Fairchild Aircraft Hagerstown, MD retiring in 1994.  The height of his professional career was launching the Weather Satellite TOPEX in 1992 in French Guiana with Fairchild Space Corp.

 

He was a longtime member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church Williamsport, MD where he served as an Usher, member of We-Care Committee, and as a Financial Processor.

 

At the age of 80 Poppy lost his leg to arterial disease and made the decision to not allow it to change his life or slow him down.  He became a member of Planet Fitness tested prosthetic prototypes and called amputee’s for support.  He prided himself on being self sufficient.

 

He belonged to the Amputee Coalition, Gamma Delta at Davis & Elkins.

 

Edward served on the Cultural Diversity Committee for the Washington County Board of Education.

 

His greatest accomplishment was helping to raise his four grandchildren Leia, David, Molly, and Elizabeth and seeing them grow into successful adults.

 

He is survived by his daughter Anne Grebenstein-Johnson and her husband Mike of Martinsburg, WV; son Edward B. Grebenstein, Jr. and his wife Lee Martin-Grebenstein of Silver Spring, MD; son Robert A. Grebenstein and his wife Sherree of Williamsport, MD; grandchildren Leia Derrick (Jason), David Haas (Mullenax), Molly Mummert (Scott), and Elizabeth Stevens (Scott); three step granddaughters Kristen Monroe (Aaron), Katie Johnson, and Kori Johnson; step great granddaughter Eliza Jane Monroe.

 

He was predeceased by a sister Jean Anne Christy and a brother Charles Henry Grebenstein.

 

A memorial service will be held at Rehoboth United Methodist Church Williamsport, MD on Monday, October 1, 2018 at 10:00 am with Rev. Michael Bennett officiating.  Inurnment will be private.
