Edwin Stenger Obituary

Williamsport, Maryland-Edwin E. “Gene” Stenger, 88 of Williamsport, MD passed away peacefully after an extended illness at Doey’s House in Hagerstown, MD with his loving family at his side.

 

Born July 10, 1931 in Hagerstown, MD, he was the son of the late Melvin Blair, Sr. and Helen Rae Wiebel Stenger.

 

He served in the United States Air Force as a Staff Sergeant during the Korean War.

 

He was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Williamsport, MD.  He was a member of Elks #378 and AMVETS Post #10 both in Hagerstown, MD and the Retired Teachers Association.

 

Gene was a 1949 graduate of James Buchanan High School in Mercersburg, PA, received his Bachelors of Science and Education from Shippensburg State Teachers College and his Masters of Education from Shippensburg State College and also received his Certificate of Administration.  He worked for the Washington County Board of Education as an Earth Science/ English Teacher at Boonsboro High School.  He was Vice Principal at Hancock Middle Senior High School and South Hagerstown High School.  He was Principal at Clear Spring High School and finished his career by retiring in 1982 as the Principal at North Hagerstown High School.  After retirement, he worked as Substitute Teacher for various schools in Washington County.  He was also a Student Teacher Supervisor at Shepherd College.

 

Gene was a lover of nature and the arts.  He loved his family and instilled his wisdom and knowledge to his children and grandchildren throughout the years.  He enjoyed the simple things in life such as poetry, birdwatching and spending time at his cabin near Mercersburg, PA.

 

He is survived by his wife of 62 years Lilli H. Passarge Stenger, 3 daughters Linda Stenger Moore and her husband Craig of Hagerstown, MD, Carol Stenger Mellott and her husband J.R. of Williamsport, MD and Ruthy Stenger Japzon of Hagerstown, MD, 4 granddaughters Whitney Mellott Hoch and her husband D.J., Leah Mellott Davoli and her husband Matt, Sarah Hensley and Lauren Hensley, 2 great granddaughters Lilli Hoch and Emma Hoch and 13 nieces and nephews.

 

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son in law Dr. Francisco “Kit” Japzon and a brother Melvin B. Stenger, Jr.

 

The family will receive friends on Thursday February 13, 2020 from 6:00-8:00pm at the Osborne Funeral Home 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD 21795.  For the convenience of family and friends the funeral home will open Thursday at 9:00am.  Services and burial will be private.
