George Daub Obituary

Williamsport, MD – George David Daub, 84, of Williamsport, MD passed away on Thursday, December 31, 2020 at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, MD.

 

He was born on March 6, 1936 in Atlantic City, NJ to the late George Edgar and Elizabeth Agnes Brucker Daub.

 

George married his lovely wife, Ruth Anderson Daub, in November 1958.  They enjoyed over 50 years together. 

 

She preceded him in death on May 26, 2012.

 

George graduated the 600 Hour Diesel Course from Greer Automotive Technical Institute Chicago, Illinois in 1959.  He also graduated with an Automatic Transmission Course from Lincoln Technical Institute Baltimore, Maryland.  He was certified in many areas of General Mechanics by NIASE over the years and specialized in Automatic Transmissions later in life.

 

George owned and operated Daub’s Garage and Transmission in Hagerstown, MD for 51 years until his retirement.

 

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy from 1953-1957.  He served his reserve time from 1957-1959. George was an Engineman 3rd Class on the U.S.S Charles R. Ware DD-865 and on board 840 days.  He was on two Mediterranean Cruises taking port in Greece, Italy, Egypt, and Turkey.  Other cruises taking port in Ireland, Cuba, and along the Baltic Sea.  He was introduced to photography while in the Navy taking many pictures of the places the Ware was docked.  George and a few sailor buddies would spend their shore leave sightseeing and taking pictures.  They were called Shutterbugs. 

 

George loved to watch old B Westerns.  His favorites were Gene Autry and Hopalong Cassidy.  He and Ruth attended the Hopalong Cassidy Annual Festival for many years. That love of travel continued as George and Ruth traveled the United States.  They visited 47 of the States and 8 Provinces of Canada with their family. For many years, they attended the U.S.S. Charles R. Ware Annual Reunions in home port Athens, Tennessee and other locations.  George enjoyed fishing here locally and while sightseeing the U.S. 

 

George had the sweetest smile and he so loved his family and friends.

 

He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Williamsport, MD, where he previously served on the property committee. 

 

George was a member of Joseph C. Herbert Post #222 American Legion in Clear Spring, MD; lifelong member W.D. Byron Post #1936 VFW in Hagerstown, MD; member of the USS Charles R. Ware DD-865 Navy Reunion Group; lifelong member of the NRA; past member of Izaak Walton League of Washington County; past member Automatic Transmission Council.

 

He is survived by his daughter Victoria M. Shirk and her husband Michael of Hagerstown, MD; daughter Christina M. Heissler and her husband Gordon of Middletown, MD; granddaughter Rachel K. Maiwald and her husband Steffan; great granddaughter Cecilia; great grandson Matthias; sister Rose Kleuser of Galloway, NJ; brother Charles Daub of Duncansville, TX; a special aunt Sheryl Noorland; special cousin Celi Nehr; other nieces and nephews.

 

He was predeceased by two sisters Katherine Redding and Anna Marie Albin; two brothers Robert Daub and Nicholas Daub.

 

The family will receive friends at the Osborne Funeral Home 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 from 1:00-3:00 and 6:00-8:00 pm.  The funeral home will be open after 12:00 (noon) on Wednesday for the convenience of family and friends.

 

Funeral services will be held at Osborne Funeral Home 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD on Thursday, January 7, 2021 at 10:00 am with Pastor Allen Reed officiating.  Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Williamsport, MD. Military graveside services will be provided by Joseph C. Herbert Post #222 American Legion Clear Spring, MD.
