Hagerstown, MD – Gerald G. Holmes, 90, of Hagerstown, MD passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, MD.
He was born on January 3, 1930 in Trego, Maryland to the late Roy Andrew and Mary Magdeline Coyle Holmes.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley L. (Martin) Holmes on November 16, 2014.
He was a 1948 graduate of Boonsboro High School in Boonsboro, MD. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education at Shepherd College and his Masters Degree in Education at Shippensburg University.
Gerald was employed as a Teacher for many years with the Washington County Board of Education until his retirement. He started his career in teaching at North Hagerstown High School and finished his teaching career as the Principal at Washington County Career Studies Center.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during the Korean War.
Gerald was a 50 plus year member of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church in Hagerstown, MD. He was involved in the United Methodist Men, served on various committees, and taught Sunday School. He was very active in the church.
He was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and Clopper-Michael Post #10 American Legion Boonsboro, MD.
In his early years he was very active in athletics.
Gerald was a die-hard Washington Redskins and Baltimore Orioles fan.
He is survived by his daughter Kim D. Holmes and her husband Dr. Stephen Sussman of Finksburg, MD; 2 grandsons whom he loved dearly Andrew and Ethan Sussman; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by a sister Evelyn L. McGolerick and a brother Leroy Holmes.
The family will receive friends at the Osborne Funeral Home 425 S. Conococheaegue St. Williamsport, MD on Friday, October 9, 2020 from 6:00-8:00 pm. The funeral home will be open after 9:00 am on Friday for the convenience of family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church Hagerstown, MD on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at 10:00 am with Rev. Christopher Serufusa officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park Williamsport, MD. Military honors will be provided by Clopper-Michael Post #10 American Legion Boonsboro, MD.
