James W. “Jim” “Becky” Baker, 83 of Williamsport, MD, passed peacefully in his sleep at home Thursday, April 22, 2021. He was Ann (Lemen) Baker’s soul mate for more than 57 years and a caring father to Lynne, Jamie and Joel. Most importantly, he was a child of God, living every day for Christ and with no complaints!
Born in Hagerstown, MD, on January 19, 1938, he was the son of the late E. Glen Baker and Ethel B. Wright Baker.
Jim was a 1955 graduate of Williamsport High School and considered himself a true River Rat. He played soccer and basketball for the high school team and continued playing for the town teams after graduation and after his return from the U.S. Navy.
Jim’s U.S. Navy days lasted from 1956 – 1960, taking him across many oceans and foreign lands. He enjoyed his time on the USS Ticonderoga, USS Bennington and USS Oriskany, but his love of Williamsport drew him home.
He and Ann married, August 3, 1963 and raised three children Lynne Kline, Jamie Blickenstaff (John) and Joel Baker (Joanne). He loved spending time with his grandchildren Jacob, Jaleigh, Ava, William, Savannah and Harper. Pap always had a story to tell and a little snack in his pocket.
He retired from Mack Trucks, Inc. in 2001 with more than 40 years and was a member of the Local UAW 171. He was known as the “checker” and the “honey man.” As a life member of the Maryland State Beekeepers association, Jim was a hobbyist beekeeper for more than 30 years and was known for his local honey and prize-winning fair entries.
He was a member of St. James Brethren Church and enjoyed Sunday fellowship. He truly enjoyed singing the old hymns and digging into God’s word.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by an infant sister, Jean Marie Baker.
Service and burial will be private, Donnie Lehman officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association 1850 York Rd. #D Timonium, MD 21093 or St. James Brethren Church 17718 Lappans Rd. Fairplay, MD 21733
