Williamsport, MD – James Edward “Bill” Kirby, Sr., 91, of Williamsport, MD passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2020 at Williamsport Nursing Home in Williamsport, MD.
He was born on September 15, 1928 in Hagerstown, MD to the late Ernest Milburn and Helen Elizabeth Hose Kirby.
He was employed by the City of Hagerstown R.C. Wilson Water Plant for over 25 years retiring in 1991.
Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Navy from 1945-1949 and served in the U.S. Army 11th Airborne 187th and 188th Command Support and received the Purple Heart Medal for his injuries sustained in Korea.
He was a member of Calvary Temple in Williamsport, MD.
He was a life member Potomac Post #202 American Legion in Williamsport, MD.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years Annie E. Kirby; daughter Myrna Murphy and her husband Kenneth of Bedington, WV; son James Kirby, Jr. and his wife Cindy of Cearfoss, MD; son Joseph Kirby and his wife Louise of Martinsburg, WV; son David Kirby and his wife Darlene of Martinsburg, WV; sisters Betty Alderman, Nancy Campbelo, Mary Brandenburg; brothers Robert Kirby, Junior Kirby, Ronnie Kirby, Paul Kirby, and Donnie Kirby; 16 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two daughters Patricia Poffenberger and Linda Pierce; sister Frances Weller; brother Kenneth Kirby.
Family and friends may pay their respects to Bill at the Osborne Funeral Home 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD on Thursday, April 23, 2020 from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.
Burial will be private.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
