Obituary

Williamsport, MD – James R. “J.R.” Mellott, II, 66, of Williamsport, MD passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2023, at Doey’s House in Hagerstown, MD.

He was born on April 28, 1957, in Hagerstown, MD to the late James Russell “Shorty” and Thelma Irene (Hockenberry) Mellott.

J.R. grew up in Downsville, MD on a 310 acre dairy farm with his family.  During his teenage years, he worked with Warren Miller building homes.  In 2002, with the help of Warren, he built a beautiful forever home for his family.

He was a 1975 graduate of Williamsport High School.  After high school, in 1977 he began working at the R. Paul Smith Power Station.  He worked his way from helper to maintenance supervisor.  In 2005, he transferred to the hydroelectric division of First Energy and finished his career under Cube Hydro.  He made many close work friends through the years that he truly valued and enjoyed. 

When he was no longer able to continue working after 40 years, he enjoyed fishing, camping with close friends and family, hunting, and spending as much time as possible with his granddaughters. 

J.R. was a founding member and past president of Williamsport Youth Soccer.  He coached countless teams including the Williamsport High School girls’ varsity team from 2003-2006.  He finished his coaching career with the Potomac Blaze travel team.  He made many lifelong friends through his coaching. 

He was a member of Downsville Christian Church.

He was also a member of IORM Tribe #84 Williamsport, MD.

J.R. is survived by his wife Carol Stenger Mellott whom he married on December 8, 1984; daughter Whitney Hoch and her husband D.J.; daughter Leah Davoli and her husband Matt; granddaughters Lilli Hoch, Emma Hoch, and Hannah Hoch; sister Debra Mellott; brother Doug Mellott and his wife Deena; brother-in-law James Melonas; 6 nieces and nephews; 5 great nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Jackie Melonas; mother and father-in-law Lilli and Edwin Stenger.

The family will receive friends at the Osborne Funeral Home, P.A. 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD on Thursday, May 11, 2023, from 6:00 -8:00 pm.  The funeral home will be open after 5:00 pm on Thursday for the convenience of family and friends.  Burial will be private.

A celebration of life will be held at Downsville Christian Church Williamsport, MD on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at 10:00 am with Rev. Craig Jones officiating.
