Downsville, MD – Jay Frederic “Fred” Pittenger, also known as “Lefty”, 81, of Downsville, MD passed away on Friday, February 14, 2020 at Homewood Retirement Center Williamsport, MD.
He was born on October 7, 1938 in Cavetown, MD to the late Harold Irven and Hulda Louise Sprecher Pittenger.
He was a 1956 graduate of Smithsburg High School Smithsburg, MD.
Fred was employed by Pangborn Corporation in Hagerstown, MD until his retirement in 2000.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
He previously attended Grace United Methodist Church Hagerstown, MD.
Fred was an avid Hunter, outdoorsman, loved his many dogs, and was an avid Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens fan.
He was a member of South Mountain Rod & Gun Club in Smithsburg, MD; Western Maryland Sportsman’s Club in Williamsport, MD; NRA Endowment Member.
He was a former member of Potomac Post #202 American Legion Williamsport, MD and Conococheague Tribe #84 IORM Williamsport, MD.
He is survived by his wife Lana Eileen Bailey Pittenger whom he married April 20, 1984; daughter Kimberly D. Mills and her husband William of Mercersburg, PA; daughter Kelli L. Byers and her husband Michael of Williamsport, MD; daughter Kristin L. Hines of Hagerstown, MD; son Matthew S. Hines and his wife Jennifer of Hancock, MD; sister Penny Sheiss and her husband Daryl of Larwill, Indiana; brother Arthur Pittenger of Hagerstown, MD; brother in law James Snyder of Smithsburg, MD; 8 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 4 nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters Pamela Snyder and Sylvia Pittenger.
A memorial service will be held at Osborne Funeral Home 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD on Friday, February 21, 2020 at 11:00 am with Rev. Jeffrey L. Shull officiating. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service on Friday from 10:00-11:00 am. Military honors will be provided by Morris Frock American Legion Post #42 Hagerstown, MD. Burial will be private.
