Larry Lushbaugh Obituary

Sharpsburg, MD- Larry Lee Lushbaugh, 74, of Sharpsburg, MD passed away on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at his home.

 

Larry was born in Hagerstown, MD on June 20, 1947 to the late William Eugene and Ellen Mae Hill Lushbaugh.

 

He was a 1965 graduate of North Hagerstown High School.

 

Larry was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in Vietnam on the USS Bass, Chicago, and Tucker. On July 29, 1967, an accidental rocket launch occurred on the super carrier USS Forrestal in the Gulf of Tonkin. This resulted in the death of 134 servicemen. Larry helped with recovery efforts which included John McCain, a U.S. Navy Lt. Commander who narrowly escaped with his life.

 

He was employed with CSXT Railway Cumberland & Brunswick for 36 years before his retirement in 2012.

 

He was of the Lutheran faith and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sharpsburg, where he served in multiple capacities.

 

Larry was a member of the Tin Can Sailors DES Vets, U.S. Navy Cruiser Sailor Association, U.S. Navy Memorial, B&O Railroad Historical Society & Museum, First Hagerstown Hose Company, Grand Lodge Brotherhood Railway Carmen of the U.S. & Canada  #519282, WB&A Chapter TCA #76-9901 Eastern Division, Transportation Communications Union/IAM, Joseph C. Herbert Post 222 American Legion of Clear Spring, where he was a member of the Last Man’s Club Vietnam. He was also a very active member of the Lion’s Club.

 

Larry is survived by his wife Alice Irene “Skip” Roulette Lushbaugh, whom he married on April 4, 1975. Besides his wife he is survived by 2 brothers, Raymond Lushbaugh of Hagerstown, MD; Richard Lushbaugh of Greencastle, PA; Niece Stacie Wolfe and her husband David along with other nieces and nephews.

 

He is preceded in death by a sister Marilyn “Sue” Shives and brother William “Billy” Lushbaugh.

 

Graveside services will be held on Friday December 3, 2021 at 2:00pm at Mt. View Cemetery in Sharpsburg, MD with Rev. Richard G. Hembrock officiating. Military Honors will be provided by Joseph C. Herbert Post 222 American Legion Clear Spring, MD.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Joseph C. Herbert Post 222 American Legion 12335 Big Spring Rd. Clear Spring, MD 21722.
