Neva Martin Obituary

Neva Kathleen Martin, 88 of Hagerstown, MD, passed away peacefully at Doey’s House on Wednesday July 13, 2022.  She was a beautiful, kind and a spitfire of a lady. Her joy and laughter will be missed by her family and friends.

Neva was born October 16, 1933, in Cumberland, Maryland to the late Florence Elizabeth and Melvin Bointon Liller.   She was the second of four children.  As a child, Neva, moved to the Hagerstown area where she later graduated from Williamsport High School, Class of 1951.

Neva had five children with her former husband Clyde Burk Sr, Clyde Jr. “Buddy”, Gale, Billy, Belinda, and Michael.

She then married her second husband, the late William James Martin on November 10, 1973. Neva and Bill had a very happy life together and she was his Queen.  They owned and operated a flea market business called “Willie the Weasel” and made lifelong friendships everywhere they went. Neva worked many jobs in her life. Aside from the flea marketing business, that she and Willy operated, Neva was a bus aide for the ARC of Washington County in the 1970’s, she worked in the kitchen at Washington County Hospital and cleaned houses to name a few of her employments.

If you knew Neva you knew she was a cat lover, especially orange tabby kitties. She had everything CAT, cat socks, cat slippers, cat figurines, cat tee-shirts, cat pajamas, cat calendars, cat necklaces and earrings and much more. Her cats were her dearly loved companions. Neva was an avid reader. Her library card was a prized possession that she used when making her regular library runs. Besides reading her Bible every day, she enjoyed reading books from authors such as James Criswell and Jan Karon. She also was a meticulous housekeeper who washed her floors on her hands and knees. She could spot a piece of lint on the floor two rooms away. She was extraordinarily organized and a stellar record keeper.  She also enjoyed sewing and quilting with her best friend. She enjoyed making her signature dishes and baking on special occasions. She will be remembered especially for her peanut butter fudge and pecan pies. She was kind and generous. Neva often ran errands for friends who were in need and helped those less fortunate. She was also known to stop by for a visit and before leaving would have the dishes washed, laundry folded, and the floors scrubbed. Neva always enjoyed finding flea market or yard sale treasures for her friends and family, whether they needed them or not.

Neva was faithful to her McDonald friends. She would meet regularly with a large group of her friends and spend hours visiting. She spent so much time at McDonald’s over the years that even the McDonald’s workers became her friends, and she would bring them Christmas gifts and display their grandchildren’s pictures on her refrigerator. Neva’s motto was, “If you can do it, then so can I.” She has been known to ride as well drive four wheelers, jump in bouncy houses, participate in massive water gun battles, go down slides, ride the rocking-spring toy animals at the park and play basketball all in her late 80’s. She was such a fun-loving, one-of-a-kind firecracker. Neva was a strong and courageous woman, who never allowed her age, arthritis, pain, or illness to hold her down.  She would smile in the face of adversity and keep going.

Neva is survived by a whole host of people as she was loved by so many. Namely her brother Vernon and his wife Judy, daughter Belinda Dorsey, son Clyde Burk, his wife Cathy, son David William (Bill) Burk, his wife Brenda, and son Michael Burk.  She is also survived by grandchildren Jessica Boyd, her husband Tony, Timothy Dorsey Jr., his wife Tiffany, April Poole, her husband Erick, Elijah Dorsey his wife Tina, Chellsie Johnson, her husband Joe, Diahann Bryan, Emmalee Rhoton, her husband Norm, David Burk his wife Valene, Travis Burk, Sarah Voss her husband Derrick, Bradley Burk and Tiffany Burk.   She is also survived by 17 great grandchildren, Elaina, Isaac, Matthew, Suzannah, Madison, Lily, Jacob, Julia, Landon, Emily, Benjamin, Jenna, Darian, Blake, Gentry, Eliza, and Ava. Neva is also survived by many family members and friends including a lifelong friend, Betty Lou Boarman, and her little doggie Holly, that Neva called “Muffin”. She is also survived by her two cats Ginger and Snowball. Neva never knew a stranger and made friends wherever she went. Neva was preceded in death by her husband William James Martin, her eldest daughter Gale Burk McKenzie, son in law Timothy Dorsey Sr, great grandson Trenton Boyd, older brother Richard Liller, and infant brother “Little Eddie”, and last but not least her loyal feline companion, Tommy Cat.
