Phyllis Jeanne Barr

St.  James, MD- Phyllis Jeanne Barr, aged 90 passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at Fahrney-Keedy Memorial Home where she has resided since September 2019.

Born June 21, 1930 on the family farm in St. James, MD, Phyllis was the only child of the late Winfield Milton and G. Gladys (Hutzell) Schamel.

She graduated from Williamsport High School in 1948 as the class Salutatorian.  She married Ernest Robert Barr on May 23, 1952 who predeceased her on May 19, 2002.

She was a secretary and for many years worked for C. William Hetzer Inc. both in the main office and later at Milestone Garden Apartments.

She was a devoted member of the St. James Brethren Church for her entire life and served as church organist for more than 50 years.  She was active in the church’s Women’s Missionary Society.

For many years she volunteered at the Washington County Hospital Auxiliary snack bar and she and Ernie volunteered at Fountain Rock Elementary School, near their home.

She enjoyed all sorts of crafts and needlework and was an accomplished knitter.  She delighted in teaching others to knit and did so at Joann’s and Michaels during her retirement years.

She is survived by a daughter, Kristi Haller and husband David of Hagerstown and a son, Gregory Barr and wife Pamela of Rawlings, MD.  She is also survived by six grandchildren, Lindsey Samonte of Lexington, KY, Amanda Barr of Hagerstown, Kelli Samonte (Patrick Treadwell) of Philadelphia, PA, Christopher Samonte (Krystal) of Cape Coral, FL, Elijah Barr (Zoie) of Fairfax, VA and Arie Barr of Rawlings, MD, and two great grandsons, Ethan and Owen Samonte.

In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by an infant son, Ernest Robert Barr, Jr.

Funeral services will be held at Osborne Funeral Home 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Don White officiating.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home 1 hour prior to the service on Wednesday from 1:00 – 2:00 pm.  Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park Williamsport, MD.
