Hi my name is Tom Schmit and I was one of Steve’s roommates at Frostburg but he became a very dear friend and he blamed me a little for making accounting look good. I was a freshman moving in with three graduate students and he immediately made me feel welcome and we were very close and I think of him often. For some reason I felt compelled just now to google him and saw the obituary and I’ve been crying ever since. I remember in college often checking on his fruit flies at midnight after going out for a couple beers he taught me racketball and how to shoot a crossbow which I put an arrow in the back of his vw wagon I believe. I cherish the time with Steve and will always think of him as my surrogate father as well as friend. I am so sorry for your loss please email anytime.

Dear Family of Steve,
I just learned of Steve's passing from an article in the Fred. News Post. I worked with him many years ago when the Md. Forest and Wildlife Service were joined in the 1980's. I was a Ranger stationed at Gambrill St. Park and got to spending many moments laughing with him and Ernie Davis. In fact, I attribute his wise advise about purchasing our first house to him- we are still living in that house.
Steve was truly a special and kind person and my heart aches for you.

Dear Joni and loved ones of Steve,

I am deeply sorry to hear of the passing of Steve. Please accept my sincere sympathy. Steve was an amazingly sweet kind man, whom I had not seen in many years, but always thought so fondly of him and dear Joni. I knew Steve from working with Joni many years ago for Washington County, and always remember his caring demeanor and love for nature. Joni, I hope your beautiful memories and deep faith help you through this difficult time. Blessings, Jenny Short

Dear Joni,

I was so sorry to hear of Steve's illness and passing. He honestly was one of the best biologists I have ever worked with and was a tremendous person. My heart aches for you and your family. Steve had such a wonderful sense of humor and was a lot of fun to work with. He will truly be missed by many and I can't even imagine how many lives he touched. I lost touch with Steve after I moved to Oregon, but reconnected in the last couple of weeks when I learned of his illness. I was thrilled to get an email from him the week before he passed. He sounded so positive that the recent news of losing him was a shock to me. You are in my thoughts and prayers and I know you have lots of wonderful happy memories that will help you through the difficult times. I feel privileged to have known Steve and to have had the pleasure of working with him.

Aunt Rose, Karen, Joni and family,
Steve will be missed so very much by so many. I was always inspired by his dedication to nature and his joyful smiles that came so easy. Although we weren't as close as some of the other cousins I was always very comfortable and happy in his presence (loved it when Joni and Steve visited Atlanta!).
Sending many hugs and wishes for happy memories to carry you through.
Love, Callie and Scott

Dear Joni, I send you hugs, and prayers for healing, and my tears. Some of those tears are from laughter. My favorite memory of Steve is from a Halloween party where he came dressed as a nerd. Trousers pulled up near his armpits, taped together glasses and a plastic pocket protector. I'm laughing now at the thought of it.
I can try to imagine your grief and yet I know that my imagining is nowhere near to what you feel. I am so sorry

Joni, words cannot express how deeply saddened we are with Steve's passing. His strength, positive thinking and love for the Lord never waivered throughout his illness. He was a remarkable man who will be greatly missed. The girls will miss their "fist bumps" every Sunday morning! We wish you peace and comfort knowing he is with his Lord.

Dear Joni - My last Sunday at Emmanuel was on Oct. 18th. Am now in Naples FL. Little did I feel on that last Sunday as I chatted with him that it would be my last until we meet again with the Lord. I loved Steve for his love that he showed to many as he shared his love of the Lord.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I had the pleasure of knowing Steve for 40years. His love and compassion for life was unsurpassable. Although we didn't stay in touch frequently, he was always the same person when we did see him. I was glad I was able to see and talk to him briefly a few weeks back. His love for you, life, and faith were undeniable.

I am so sorry for your loss, Joni. I consider myself very blessed to have known & worked with Steve. He was one of the most honorable, professional, yet fun loving coworkers who I have ever worked with. You always knew he had your back when things got tough & could be counted on to give you a straight answer - no fluff. No one will ever come close to filling his place on this earth. He was one-of-a-kind. Our love & prayers are being sent your way.

My Dad, who also worked for the State (DNR), always spoke very highly of Steve. Please remember that Blessed [are] they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. (Matthew 5:4). May God Almighty hold you in His loving arms during your time of need as well as always.

So shocked and sad to read this Joni. I admired Steve on so many levels. Intelligent, professional yet always so personable. We lost touch the last several years and I never knew he was sick. Life is so fragile yet we take it so much for granted. Steve will be greatly missed. .
